EDMUND  Married 26/06/1877  to Elizabeth Reen (1836 )

Superintendant of police of Chichester son of Charles Lucas labourer. 1881 census shows them living at Southgate County Police Station and Maresfield !(1901) Edmund Lucas after passing a medical examination as to his health and bodily strength (undertaken by R. Turner MD surgeon) was appointed a constable of the West Sussex Constabulary Force on 10/06/1863 under the approval of F. Monp (anrie?) Chief constable. On 20/06/1863 his appointment was approved and sworn before George Bartelet JP and John Napper JP at the Petty Sessions held at Petworth Town hall. At the time of joining he was aged 22 (born Pagham) residing at Rose Cottage, 5ft 10" with oval visage,fair complexion, light brown hair, blue eyes, proportionate figure, a labourer by trade, with no particular marks. His previous employer had been Mr John Admas at Pagham. On 01/08/1863 he was attached to the Horsham Division, being transferred to Littlehampton on 03/07/1877, then to Horsham again on 13/01/1877 followed by Chichester 16/04/1877) and Midhurst (21/06/1882) where he stayed till leaving the service. On 12/07/1865 he was promoted to 2nd class constable, on 24/10/1866 promoted to 1st class on 23/12/1872 promoted to the marked class, on 28/10/1874 promoted to sergeant and on 18/04/1877 promoted to superintendant.. On 22/10/1886 he was called on to resign through ill health and granted a pension of £60 per annum by order of the Quarter Sessions Court (confirmed by Circular Order 1080 isued by the Chief Constables Office at Petworth on 21/10/1886. He was recommended for a lower rate of pension in proprtion to his length of servie in consequence of late unsatisfactory performance of his duties, and especially in a case of gross negligence in permitting the alteration of figures by a Corporal of Marines in an account for conveyance of deserters, which led to a Court Martial and serious complaints from the Military Authorities. An inquiry was held by the Chief Constable GRB Drummond with the assistance of Supts Henderson (Deputy Chief Constable) & Clarke on07/09/1886 when Supt. Lucas was severely reprimanded by the chief Constable. Edmund Lucas received his first pension payment of £15 on 21/01/1887 and thereafter was £15 at quarterly intervals till 30/06/1906 (and probably beyond, later records still to be searched).
