In 1622 a group of women including Rachel, aged 32, and Cassandra, aged 36, were sent to Virginia as wives for settlers. Each settler gave the London Company 120 pounds of tobacco in payment for his bride's passage.

This was the year of Virginia's worst Indian massacre. The Powhatan Indians under Chief Opechancanough, suddenly attacked the colonists who lived along the banks of the James River, and massacred 347 of them.
